Cub Pride Article - December 16, 2016 by Mrs. Rebecca Merriman, GO CAPS Coordinator:

GO CAPS Monett was recently recognized as the recipient of the "Making Learning Come Alive" award at the recent Celebration of Schools event held at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.  The event, hosted by the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence (SWC), brought together educators and school board members from forty-eight participating school districts.  The Monett program was one of eleven innovative programs nominated for the award.  We are honored to have received this distinction!

GO CAPS students are at work throughout the business community on real-world projects solving real-world problems.

Engineering and Manufacturing students are learning how to use AutoCAD to design makerspace carts for Monett Intermediate School.  This project involves both educators at the school and a local manufacturer who will be producing the makerspace carts.  Students are also collaborating with EFCO structural engineers to design a test fixture that will help provide evidence of how much wind load can put on a particular type of structural assembly without a failure.

Medicine & Health Care students’ teams have met with multiple professionals over the past weeks to launch new projects.  One team is working with Lacoba Homes on a “Music and Memory” project to help residents.  Cox Monett Rehab is relying on a student team to help them develop strategies to effectively launch a Teletrainer system to smaller school districts, bringing the expertise of athletic trainers in assessing sports injuries without the cost of an on-site trainer.  Student teams are also working on sterile processing improvements, updating sports medicine protocols, developing effective inventory systems for the emergency department, and continuing to job shadow weekly throughout medical facilities in our community.

Throughout the semester, Teacher Education students have been exposed to the various teaching levels through short 1-and 2-week observation assignments.  As they developed an interest in a particular age group, this led to our current long-term classroom assignment where they've been observing and working directly with classroom teachers for the past three weeks.  In addition, we've been working on several projects with administrators throughout the district: flexible seating research and options, summer school enrollment, new book organization with the elementary librarian, and safety equipment and protocol.

Technology Solutions students are creating a new website and logo for the Barry-Lawrence United Fund as a means to promote the organization, collect donations, and receive online applications.  Three projects with Jack Henry and Associates have involved developing a detailed plan of action for asset resale, researching scheduling apps and hardware for conference rooms, and evaluating pre-loaded software options on new laptops.  Students are working on-site at MEA Financial to develop and create a new theme for an educational banking app.

As you can see, we’ve been busy!  Enrollment has begun for the 2017-2018 school year.  Online applications will soon be available on our student-designed website, www.gocapsmonett.com.  Stay up-to-date on the exciting work taking place in GO CAPS by following us on Twitter at @GOCAPSmonett.
